To assess mental disorders, find psychiatric cases and diagnose them, the following instruments were used in the BASE intensive protocol (IP):
The Geriatric Mental State Interview, version A (GMS-A, Copeland et al., 1986; Mc William et al. 1988; see Literature) which is a semi-structured interview at Time 1 and version B at Time 3 and Time 4.
Additionally the History and Aetiology Schedule (HAS, Copeland et al., 1986; Mc William et al. 1988; see Literature) which is a semi-structured anamnestic interview for finding DSM - and ICD diagnoses.

In the following tables you will find the disorders included within the interview, as well as the variables concerning each disorder. There are also links to the original items in the questionnaire.

In both questionnaires the items concerning mental disorders were coded as follows:
0 = no (the behavior in question is "normal"),
1 = yes (the behavior in question is "abnormal"), but seldom, fleeting or not very distinct,
2 = yes (the behavior in question is "abnormal"), and severe, frequent, or persistent;
8 = no reply elicited or question not understood or reply inaudible, inappropriate, incoherent or rating uncertain;
9 = question not asked or inapplicable;
Where a rating is only 0 / 1, then:
0 = no (or "normal")
1 = yes (or "abnormal").

Literature: Helmchen, Baltes, Geiselmann, Kanowski, Linden, Reischies, Wagner, & Wilms, 1996; Helmchen, Baltes, Geiselmann, Kanowski, Linden, Reischies, Wagner, Wernicke, & Wilms, 1999.
